Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Special Effects--"The Green Tank"

FS 1 Launch

The Green Tank (below) looks pretty mundane, but Voyage's wonderful underwater effects sequences were shot in "the green tank."

Surface shots were accomplished with the 18 foot model either on Serson Lake (see the "Special Effects" pages of this site) or in the back-lot moat,  but all underwater photography was done in "The Green Tank.  The circular tank was 32 feet in diameter and 14 feet deep with an excellent filter system.

From a 5-foot work platform at the top, the effects people were able to operate a variety of wiring rigs used to control the movement of the miniatures within the tank.  A man standing on the platform could raise or lower the miniature and also change it's attitude.  .

Another Great FS 1 Launch

Powerful fans agitated the water to create the effect of surface pattern.  Above the work platform were two decks for the lights.  As seen above, the whole of the tank was tarped in with moveable black canvas.
