Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

Richard Basehart and David Hedison often complained about the lack of women in Voyage's story lines, especially after the second season, at which point women virtually disappeared from the series.  Sure--it was an action-adventure show, which in its final years deteriorated into an all-male monster-of-the-week spectacle, but why the singular lack of women?  The most prevalent story is that the cost-conscious Irwin Allen nixed the ladies because of the added cost of wardrobe, hair-styling, makeup and all the extras attendant upon having women involved in the production.  So what was a typical day actually like for the guys?  Well, we can at least address Mr. Hedison specifically.  Ready now?  Scroll down and take a gander at the handsome captain amusing himself between takes.

Ooh La La, mon Captain.

Alright Captain--which one of these fine ladies gave you the bruise on your forehead?

At last, it can be told....the episode D. H. was shooting when the above gaggle of giggling gals glided through the set, was, "The Death Ship," and it was bad guy Arthur Chandler, a la guest star David Sheiner, who whacked him in the noggin.  If he'd have struck any lower, guest Sheiner might have given our dear captain a shiner.  (I can't really claim I didn't just write that, because, well, I did.  But I will apologize.)   Blood on Voyage was a rarity.
